Preservation of the Torah and Pikuach Nefesh

שו"תPreservation of the Torah and Pikuach Nefesh
שאל לפני 8 חודשים

A hypothetical question, but one that interests me at least, I hope you will agree to answer, why not, is someone allowed or perhaps obligated to give up their life or commit incest in order to save the texts of the entire Torah and the literature of the Sages that would otherwise be lost from humanity, like Lot's daughters. And what about giving up someone else's life for such a purpose?

I do not think that one should sacrifice a soul. It is a violation of the prohibition, since one Sabbath is violated on it so that many will be kept. Even according to the method that violates the Sabbath for spiritual reasons (according to the Bible, there is a disagreement among the Rishonim on this – Tos' and Rashba), sacrificing a soul is not desecrating the Sabbath. The same applies to a sin per se, such as that of Lot's daughters. Even there, if it is a sin of murder or suicide, then no. In my opinion, it is only a sin that has halakhic aspects only.
