Internal question about a halakhic ruling

שו"תInternal question about a halakhic ruling
שאל לפני 3 שנים

Rabbi Shalom,
There is something I don't understand in your speech. On the one hand, you claim that the authority of the sages is from "not to deviate" and of course from the necessity of a source of authority, while on the other hand, you call for innovation in halakha, which contradicts not to deviate, that you are bound by the words of the sages, not right or left. I would be happy to explain the Torah in great detail.

Authority is given only to certain institutions (Sanhedrin or Talmud). Innovation is in relation to other sources that do not have authority by virtue of "Le Tesur" or otherwise. Beyond that, there is interpretive innovation, and this can also revolve around Sanhedrin rulings. I expanded on this in my series of columns on Modern Orthodoxy here on the site.
