Character Refinement
Question
How can I change my character traits? I’ve studied ethical works, but I don’t feel that it helps me beyond giving me knowledge.
Answer
I don’t think there is a direct way to approach character traits. The heart is drawn after actions. In order to change a given trait, one must perform actions connected to it (sometimes even in an extreme way, as Maimonides wrote regarding reaching the middle path). Actions are the means for changing a trait, but beyond that, they are also what is in our hands, and therefore they are the only thing for which we are held accountable. And the masters of ethics already wrote that it is harder to change one trait than to complete the entire Torah.
