Q&A: Kahneman and Intuition
Kahneman and Intuition
Question
I just read in Thinking, Fast and Slow Kahneman’s theory about the right and left hemispheres.
As I was reading, it seemed to me that these are your ideas about intuition and logic. Have you ever written about the overlap between Kahneman’s identification and yours? Do you think the ideas are connected?
Answer
I don’t remember exactly what he writes there right now, but for quite a long time people have associated synthetic and analytic thinking with the difference between the two hemispheres (the left is analytic and the right is synthetic). It seems to me that in Two Carts I noted this, and even commented on the choice of left (analytic) and right (synthetic) in the French parliament and more generally.
Discussion on Answer
Rabbi, I couldn’t find it. 🙁
S.,
In Two Carts, p. 396 n. 11, there is a brief note on identifying the two hemispheres. On right and left, see the note about spurious correlations and the section devoted to that.
Thanks for that. I’ll look in Two Carts.
