Q&A: Rice Cakes
Rice Cakes
Question
Hello Rabbi,
I would be glad to receive a halakhic opinion from the Rabbi regarding this quotation:
A similar case is discussed by contemporary halakhic decisors regarding rice cakes. The ruling is that since they are eaten for satiety, this falls under the prohibition of food cooked by non-Jews, and it is not comparable to roasted grains, which the halakhic decisors permitted people to eat because they are not considered an important food.

See the book Between Israel and the Nations, chapter 6, section 45.
Is there reason to be concerned about this view?
Thank you in advance.
Answer
From a logical standpoint, it does not seem so to me. This is not a food that is fit for a king’s table. True, the Rashba’s view is that if it is eaten for satiety and not merely to accompany bread, then even if it is not fit for a king’s table it is still forbidden, but in my humble opinion that is forced.
