Q&A: Cooking After Cooking with Liquids
Cooking After Cooking with Liquids
Question
Hello,
Is there a rationale for the rule of cooking after cooking with liquids (not water)? I haven’t really managed to find anything beyond resolving a contradiction in Rashi.
Does one need to be concerned about this in practice? I saw that Rabbi Ovadia wrote leniently that one may use indirect causation to place something liquid before the Sabbath timer turns on the hotplate—can one rely on that?
Thank you in advance.
Answer
The rationale is that with liquids, reheating is considered cooking. As for a dish like soup, I really think that is not a reasonable distinction. And if Rabbi Ovadia writes something, does he need my approval? In other words: if I answer you that you can rely on it, whom will you ask whether you can rely on me?
