Q&A: Shavers
Shavers
Question
Peace and blessings.
I wanted to ask the Rabbi for his opinion about using electric shavers—whether they are considered a razor or not. I saw that the Rabbi had been asked about this in the past, but there the main issue was the nature of the cutting action: whether it is considered shaving with a razor or cutting with scissors.
I wanted to ask from another angle: is the lenient view that something counted as a razor is permitted even when the result is equivalent to an actual razor merely a formal halakhic argument, or would it be forbidden by substantive logic?
I saw that the Chazon Ish forbids it because of the end result. And it seems to me that one has to say honestly that his words are very clear, and just as in the “swimsuit” parable that the Rabbi often speaks about, it becomes clear that one should follow substance and not arbitrary form, so here too the Sages certainly did not create a leniency on an arbitrary formal basis, but rather on a substantive one.
And although it seems to me that one could propose “hidden variables” that would explain why this specific form of cutting is prohibited according to certain “hidden variables” underlying the prohibition, it is doubtful whether that is really possible. And according to the reasons that appear in the early discussions of the commandment, this is a prohibition whose rationale seems tied to the result of the act—that is, to its actual appearance.
In addition, I would like to take this opportunity to wish the Rabbi a happy and blessed new year, for him and the members of his household. May we be blessed, and may your wellsprings overflow within us, “and the earth shall be filled…” I would also like to express my gratitude and appreciation for the importance and quality of the things that the Rabbi contributes to our growth.
(To resolve the apparent contradiction between a spring and a sea, I would say that for the Rabbi it is in the sense of a spring that flows from itself; for us it is still in the sense of a sea, and so on, and so on.)
