For all those who are offended in the name of the Yemenites or the Bukharans—about whom it is said, “Those who are insulted but do not insult in return, who hear their disgrace and do not answer back.” I can’t hold myself back, because this keeps coming up again and again.
Offense of this kind rests on clearly racist assumptions—precisely unlike the irony of David Assaf, which contains no racism at all.
After all, he was mocking the Yemenites’ focus on eating and smoking, while implicitly wondering why they don’t also devote some attention to the writings of Yemenite rabbis and thinkers, and to their intellectual and spiritual heritage. Is that not a worthy target for humor? If this had been an Ashkenazi event focused on cholent, wouldn’t we all laugh? But making fun of Ashkenazim is allowed, because we expect from them a higher level of human and cultural behavior. But from Yemenites and Bukharans, according to those who are offended, we should expect nothing. They’re just primitive like that, so we should forgive them for focusing on food and smoking and not expect from them the standards that would be appropriate for Ashkenazim.

By the way, the same applies to our leftist cousins who refuse to demand proper standards of behavior from the Palestinians; there too it is done in the name of concern for the honor of the poor, deprived Oriental and out of opposition to racism.
