Q&A: The Validity of Annulment of Vows
The Validity of Annulment of Vows
Question
What is the validity of the annulment of vows that people commonly recite nowadays? After all, seemingly one is required to consult a rabbi, not just a religious court in general, about his specific actions, and the rabbi would have to find him an opening—so how can vows be annulled without either of those, even if you do have a religious court?
Why do I need to say the annulment of vows at all? Personally, for example, I remember all the vows I made in my life (three), and I already fulfilled two of them, while with the additional one it is not clear when, if ever, it would be considered fulfilled. Since that vow was to try not to continue some bad habit of mine, I don’t know whether with such a vow one can say that it was violated or fulfilled.
