Q&A: Question About Using WD-40 on Cooking Utensils
Question About Using WD-40 on Cooking Utensils
Question
Hello Rabbi,
I would like to ask a halakhic question:
I have an electric cooking utensil that had a little rust on it, so I sprayed it with WD-40. The packaging explicitly states that it is “not for consumption,” similar to the spray in the following link:
https://www.homecenter.co.il/products/1675088322542
The spray came into contact with the part of the utensil in which food is actually cooked.
I would like to know whether in such a case the utensil requires koshering, or whether, since the spray is defined as a substance unfit for consumption, there is no need for koshering.
Answer
Why would it require koshering?
Discussion on Answer
It's unfit for consumption. There's no problem.
My feeling is that maybe that's just the company's legal cover, and in practice nothing would happen if I ate it, but I think the criterion is that no normal person would put this oil in his mouth.
That has nothing to do with the question of what would happen to you if you put it in your mouth. The oil is intended for cleaning, not for eating. That's all. It's possible that if you drink a little bleach, nothing will happen to you. That doesn't make it food.
Maybe the spray isn't kosher.
