Q&A: Kashering an Electric Hot Water Urn for Passover
Kashering an Electric Hot Water Urn for Passover
Question
Hello Rabbi,
I am in the process of kashering the Sabbath hot water urn for Passover.
My wife puts kugel wrapped in aluminum foil on the lid to warm it on the Sabbath.
So the kugel does not come into direct contact with the lid.
Is that considered that the kugel was cooked on it?
If so,
I read that kashering the lid requires purging in boiling water.
Is it enough if I put the lid in a deep baking pan and pour hot water over it from the electric kettle?
I do not want to put it into a pot of boiling water, since it has nails and rubber parts on it that could be damaged in such a process.
Answer
If the kugel is completely wrapped, then there is no problem. The kashering you described is sufficient. In any case, on Passover you do not use the lid in contact with food.
Kugel tends to leak oil through the aluminum foil.
