Q&A: Bean-Based Coffee Machine
Bean-Based Coffee Machine
Question
Hello and blessings,
I purchased a bean-based coffee machine.
Do the detachable parts in it need immersion?
I mean the brewing handle, the tamper for the grounds after grinding, and perhaps the trays that the cups sit on (although I don’t know whether those generally require immersion).
It should be noted that these utensils have no use other than in the machine, and perhaps this is similar to an electric kettle, which I do not usually immerse since it has no use apart from the base that is plugged into the wall.
I would be glad to hear the Rabbi’s opinion.
Thank you.
Answer
See here for grounds to exempt: https://meshiv.co.il/shelot_vetshuvot/%D7%94%D7%90%D7%9D-%D7%9E%D7%9B%D7%95%D7%A0%D7%AA-%D7%A7%D7%A4%D7%94-%D7%98%D7%A2%D7%95%D7%9F-%D7%98%D7%91%D7%99%D7%9C%D7%94/
Thank you, I looked into it.
I’d appreciate help understanding what he writes there regarding the brewing handle:
"It further seems possible to add another factor for leniency, based on what I have seen: that the receptacle parts of these devices, even those made of metal, are for the most part connected and supported within them by holders made of hard plastic or other materials that are not subject to immersion, and were it not for those holders, the receptacle would not be a functional vessel at all. In this we enter into the dispute among the medieval authorities (Rishonim) mentioned in Beit Yosef (sec. 120, pars. 5–6), whether we follow the supporting component, and the Beit Yosef’s ruling is that one should immerse them without a blessing; and see also the Shakh (subsec. 13)."
Practically speaking—immerse without a blessing, or exempt from immersion?
Thank you
