Certainty of God’s Existence
Question
Hello Rabbi,
What is more certain: that 1+1=2, or that God exists? And regarding composition, is the claim that 1+1=2 necessarily true, and if so, how and why not?
Answer
1+1=2 is more certain, because that is an analytic claim (its truth follows from the very meaning of its concepts, and therefore it is impossible to deny it and remain consistent). The claim that God exists is a synthetic claim, a factual claim. See there in the first notebook.
