I saw your article in “Needs Analysis” about the importance of the view of ordinary people.
A nice proof and example for your point can be brought from Sabbath 81a: “Zunin came to the study hall and said to them: My rabbis, what is the measure for stones used in the privy? They said to him: an olive’s bulk, a nut’s bulk, and an egg’s bulk. He said to them: Would someone then bring in weights? They reconsidered and concluded: a handful.” So we see that even the tannaim retracted their views because of the cross-fertilization that came from outside, from ordinary people who ask the realistic, down-to-earth question.
