Q&A: Conservative Halacha
Conservative Halacha
Question
Hi Rabbi, I am wondering if there is a way to prove that Conservative Halacha is not correct,
Thanks
Answer
Not at all.
Who says they aren’t right? There is no sharp difference between their approach and the regular halakhic approach. It is more a question of proportions, and of course there are differences among the various approaches on their side and among different halakhic approaches. Each issue has to be judged on its own merits.
See the classification I made here:
Now try to place the Conservatives on that map.
Discussion on Answer
So if we cant prove the "truth of the orthodoxy" vs. Conservative, what is the reason someone should follow the orthodox way?
I don’t think Rabbi Michi would tell you to follow anyone.
Follow what is right.
It doesn’t matter who you heard the argument from, only whether the argument is correct.
We are not talking about proofs but about impressions and judgments. (If you do not accept arguments that are not proofs, go read my books Two Wagons and Truth and Stability.) As I wrote, on every question a person needs to form his own position. There is no reason in the world to define yourself sweepingly under one label or another. And indeed, Moish wrote well: follow the argument, not the person making it.
