At last, someone as despairing as I am finds the existentialist hidden inside the modern Rabbi Kant (that is, Rabbi Abraham).

By the way, a question for Rabbi Abraham:
I bought a book by Yirmiyahu Yovel on Kant’s metaphysics. Does the Rabbi think Yirmiyahu Yovel can be relied on in understanding Kant? (I’m just interested in whether my faith can be settled with this great philosopher…)

You sound very despairing, to the point of feeling that “God has abandoned the earth.” Maybe it will encourage you to know that according to the Bank of Israel companies survey, the economy in Israel is in good shape, and there is a steady rise in profitability, exports, and employment. See the article “Company managers are optimistic: most of the economy is in a positive מצב” (on the Israel Hayom website).

And the gloomy forecasts of the meteorologists, who predicted a drought year for us, were proven wrong. After the many were stirred to prayer, the Lord visited His land with rains of blessing. And the desperate pursuit of the Prime Minister, to the point that they are rummaging through old recordings of his family members, also shows that he is doing well, and that the economic, security, and diplomatic condition of the State of Israel is strong.

And from our own flesh we shall see. The great awakening toward closeness to God and the search for Him in every possible direction. Some seek Him in mysticism or in Hasidism, and others in philosophy of every kind. And the reason is logical: a prosperous society of abundance, less preoccupied with basic survival needs, is freer to seek spirituality; and when a person seeks his God, the saying is fulfilled in him: “If you have labored and found, believe it!”

Shai, I am not familiar with Yovel’s book, and I am also not an expert on Kant, so I cannot answer. But in my opinion, the question of what Kant said is not important. What matters is examining the ideas. So read, examine the ideas, and form a position about them. Whether those ideas are Kant’s or Yirmiyahu Yovel’s is not really important.
