Question

Dear Rabbi,
Since lately Israeli and global discourse has been flooded with warnings about the dangers lurking at democracy’s doorstep, I’ve devoted quite a bit of thought to the matter, and the following insights have occurred to me:
In the United States, which claims to represent democratic values and has even tried to impose them, Black people were discriminated against under the protection of democracy, and even today they are disadvantaged under the protection of democracy. Under the protection of democracy one can buy weapons, because lobbying is a legal part of the democratic system in the U.S.
The democratic countries of Europe and Britain ruled over other peoples in Africa and Asia while preserving democracy internally, and those peoples needed bloody wars in order to free themselves.
So perhaps the time has come to wake up, and instead of swearing allegiance to democracy, to find a substitute value—perhaps the equal worth of every human being?!
