Is it proper to refrain from eating geese because of cruelty to animals?
Question
Hello and blessings,
Is it proper to refrain from eating geese because of cruelty to animals (force-feeding, etc.)?
Regards, Benjamin
Answer
Absolutely. It is proper to refrain from eating animals altogether.
Discussion on Answer
Yes (unfortunately not strong enough to be vegan). The other animals raised for food also go through severe abuse.
What is the ideology behind veganism?
I understand if we're talking about the abuse animals go through, but there are those who also don't eat free-range eggs or drink cow's milk because it belongs to her and things like that—do you connect with that too?
No
If there were a halakha that it is forbidden to consume dairy products, then presumably the Rabbi would be careful about it.
So why, when it's a matter of morality, is he not? In your view, does morality have a lower status than Jewish law (when there is no conflict between the values)?
Or is it that because of desire you claim there isn't a sufficient moral problem here…?
There's one thing I don't understand. If abuse counts as cruelty to animals, doesn't killing count? The wonders of religious failures.
A.,
When you get to hell you'll understand that abuse is more severe.
Thanks for the invitation to visit you there, but I'll pass.
When there is a specific halakha, there is a long tradition of how to deal with it. But clearly this is also a matter of habit and how deeply ingrained it is in you. Beyond that, there is also the question of how significant it is (when I consume dairy products, my contribution to the overall harm is negligible).
It never crossed my mind to invite you to visit me. I'm not that cruel…
By the first or second section at most, you'll already understand the point. You won't need to delve any deeper.
Haha, Rabbi, are you a vegetarian?
(I asked specifically about geese, since as is well known, they undergo abuse through force-feeding…)
