Question

There is a well-known question: who says we weren’t all created yesterday, with all our experiences and memories implanted in our minds?
I’ve never managed to understand why it is preferable to say that we really lived those lives rather than that the memories were implanted in our minds.
After all, both theories explain all the data equally well! And there is even an argument in favor of the other side, since the possibility that all the memories are real is only a single possibility, whereas on the other side there are infinitely many other possibilities: 1. That all the memories from birth until yesterday were implanted in us (and we have really only been alive since yesterday). 2. That all the memories from birth until a week ago were implanted in us (and we have really only been alive for only a week). 3. That all the memories from birth until a year ago were implanted in us (and we have really only been alive for only a year). And so on. One versus infinity—who wins? Infinity!
And even if you manage to explain that the theory is simpler and that Occam’s Razor comes in here, what is the logic of Occam’s Razor itself? Who says it faithfully describes reality? After all, it could really be that the memories were inserted into our minds. Only statistics showing that it is more likely that the thoughts were not implanted than that they were implanted (for example, that 90% of memory implantations leave traces, and here no trace was left) could decide this question!
Otherwise it’s like arriving at a remote planet, seeing some statue that could be built by one creature, and deciding that it really was built by one creature in order “not to multiply entities beyond necessity.” Who says it was built by one being? Maybe on that planet the custom is for 10 beings to build a statue together? How can one decide objective reality with such a strange tool?
