Because they study about the Torah (maybe; I’m not there), and not the Torah itself. I ask the same question about studying the general interpretive principles by which the Torah is expounded—not the actual derivations themselves, but the rules of derivation.

I think it’s very hard to separate the parts. In the classes we study quite a few Talmudic passages the way they are studied in yeshivas. In any case, as Torah study on the part of the person, this certainly counts.
