Q&A: Actions Performed on the Sabbath
Actions Performed on the Sabbath
Question
Hi,
If things were created or edited during the Sabbath, and there is a direct connection between the Sabbath desecration and their existence, is it permitted to access them on Saturday night?
A post published on a social network during the Sabbath (by a Jew), Saturday-night news items (which were edited during the Sabbath, by a Jew of course), etc.
Is it permitted to derive "benefit" from them on Saturday night(?)
What about the operation of a website like this one during the Sabbath? (Assuming the site owner knows that Jews read here.) Is it permitted to run it? / to pay money for its "being kept online" even during the Sabbath?
Thank you
Answer
Yes. When this is done through instructing a non-Jew, there is a rule that one waits after the Sabbath for the amount of time it would take to do it. And if there are Jews who read some website, that is their problem. The site owner does not have to shut down the site because of them.
