Question

Some ask about an apparent contradiction among the medieval authorities (Rishonim) regarding the issue of “do not deviate” and who holds the authority.
Sometimes it says the religious court of his generation,
and sometimes the court in Jerusalem.
 
It occurred to me in my peppery pilpul that it originally said “the court in…”
and afterward some editions expanded it to “the (Great) Court in Jerusalem,” following the plain meaning of the Talmud,
while others mistakenly expanded it to “the court of his generation.”
 
Is it possible that my assessment is correct?
How does one clarify something like that?
