Q&A: Yoga and Idolatry
Yoga and Idolatry
Question
Hello and blessings, Rabbi,
I would be glad to consult with you about an important issue that has been bothering me for many years.
I am a yoga teacher.
In the past I studied, when I was secular, a long course that included texts and writings from the world of the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita and more.. combined with deep training in yoga.
When I became religious, at first I threw everything "in the trash".. Afterward I went back to practicing carefully.
Today I practice regularly and teach women.
My question is about idolatry.
I received a job offer in the field, and it is really good and rare (to be part of the teaching staff in a yoga teacher-training course) the issue is that therethey also teach some of the writings.
To what extent, and if at all, is it possible to read and draw inspiration from these writings?
If there is a text that speaks about the way of practicing, for example, is it permitted?
There were ancient yogis who documented processes within physical practice and also breathing practices.
Sometimes they weave their gods into it.
I would be glad to hear the Rabbi's opinion on the subject.
Thank you very much
Answer
In everything that has to do with technique, I don’t see a problem. Studying forms of worship or the mythology in itself, if it is done for the sake of knowledge (as in an academic course on mythology or the history of religions), is also permitted. If you are required to acknowledge some idols and their influence, even if you yourself do not accept them but those are the requirements of that course of study, that seems forbidden to me. The fact that some idols are mentioned in the text you are studying as part of the relevant material makes no difference for you. Eat the fruit and throw away the peel.
Thank you very much!
Have a peaceful Sabbath 🌺
