Q&A: Recommended Study Book – In-Depth Analysis
Recommended Study Book – In-Depth Analysis
Question
Hello Rabbi,
I’ve been learning Rabbi Lichtenstein’s lectures in a study partnership for some time now (Bava Metzia, at the moment). We’re really enjoying the structure of the book (divided into lectures with an organized list of sources, followed by a written development that relates to the sources and tries to convey through them some conceptual point or analytic Talmudic insight), but we feel that it sometimes focuses on very esoteric points (as is the nature of books written in sequential order through the tractate). We would prefer to learn from a book that contains a selection of foundational topics for in-depth Talmud study—preferably in a structure similar to Rabbi Lichtenstein’s lectures (organized, with some kind of source list or a certain framework from which one can understand what the relevant sources are).
Does the Rabbi recommend a particular book, or can you point us to a style similar to what was described above?
Answer
I’m not familiar with one. But I don’t think Rabbi Lichtenstein deals with esoteric points. I also don’t think it matters all that much, since analytic skill is acquired through all topics, not דווקא the central ones.
