Q&A: Ketzot HaChoshen Books
Ketzot HaChoshen Books
Question
To the Rabbi,
We are learning tractate Ketubot this year, and we wanted to study the books of Rabbi Aryeh Leib HaKohen Heller on the tractate—that is, Ketzot HaChoshen and Avnei Milluim. Which does the Rabbi recommend more, Avnei Milluim or Ketzot HaChoshen? If Avnei Milluim, then in the order of the laws of Ketubot, or is it better to organize it by topics?
With thanks and in the hope of full understanding,
Answer
I think there is no real connection between those books and your Talmud study, so there is no need to coordinate them precisely. The laws of Ketubot are found at the end of the tractate, whereas in yeshivas they generally study the beginning, which deals with doubts and proofs. If you want to improve your analytical ability, you can study Ketzot HaChoshen or Avnei Milluim in order, without any particular connection to Ketubot. By the way, if you study Shev Shema'tata, that will be more connected to your yeshiva learning (the beginning of Ketubot). It deals with presumptions, doubts, majority, and the other laws of evidence. Those are exactly the topics of the first chapter of Ketubot.
Much success.
