Several Questions About the Laws of Ne’ilah
Question
- Is it possible to pray Ne’ilah before Minchah?
- If someone did not pray Shacharit unintentionally or due to circumstances beyond his control, can he make it up during Ne’ilah, or only during Minchah?
- If we say that he can make it up during Ne’ilah, and he only remembered after he had already prayed Ne’ilah, is it preferable for him to pray Minchah again or Ne’ilah again? (A practical difference would be regarding saying “What are we, what are our lives”; see Yoma 87b.)
Answer
1. I think that if you pray before Minchah, it will be considered Minchah.
2. From the plain implication of the halakhic decisors, it appears that even if you did not pray Minchah, you do not make it up during Ne’ilah, and there is a dispute whether to make it up at Ma’ariv. See an overview here: https://daf-yomi.com/Data/UploadedFiles/Forums/91344.pdf Therefore it seems that one certainly does not make up Shacharit during Ne’ilah.
3. I do not think that this is indispensable either way.
Discussion on Answer
Presumably not, because he altered the established formula of the blessings.
1. And on fast days when they would pray Ne’ilah, הרי (if I’m not mistaken) those were different blessings from the regular Minchah service. If someone prayed the fast-day Ne’ilah before Minchah, has he fulfilled his obligation?
