Q&A: The Order of the Blessings for Lighting Hanukkah Candles
The Order of the Blessings for Lighting Hanukkah Candles
Question
Hello Rabbi,
From what I know, there are several cases in which the order of precedence among blessings is determined by considerations such as “immediately prior to performing them” or avoiding an interruption between matters—for example, saying Shehecheyanu before “Who creates the fruit of the tree,” saying “to dwell in the sukkah” before the blessing over bread, and perhaps also saying Shehecheyanu before lighting the holiday candle. Even so, I haven’t found anyone who addresses this issue with respect to the blessing over the Hanukkah candle (and similarly, the reading of the Megillah, the shofar, and perhaps a few other commandments I’m forgetting). Seemingly, it would be preferable to recite “Who performed miracles,” then Shehecheyanu, and only then “to light the Hanukkah candle,” and proceed straight to the lighting.
I would be very grateful if the Rabbi could sort out the various reasons, the differences between the above topics, and whether they are relevant to the order of the blessings for Hanukkah candles.
Happy Hanukkah!
