Q&A: Does the Type of Kippah Not Matter at All?
Does the Type of Kippah Not Matter at All?
Question
Hello, I’m considering switching to a smaller knitted kippah. For the past two years I’ve had a large knitted kippah with a stripe around it, the kind only Hardal people wear (like Smotrich). Now, this sounds like a really stupid question, and who cares what kind of kippah it is, but a kippah is a very strong symbol of belonging, and I saw that you said its significance is to distinguish between those with religious commitment and those without. So if that’s the case, it’s very hard for me right now to identify with the Hardal public, even if it’s only in the eyes of others, and I really recoil from that public. Do you see my concerns as exaggerated or justified? (From someone who recoils from Haredi society and wears a black kippah.)
