Q&A: Customers' Right to Sue
Customers' Right to Sue
Question
In the United States, forty states filed a complaint against Meta because social networks harm the mental, and sometimes physical, health of young people. I didn’t understand the basis of the complaint: Meta doesn’t force anyone to use it. It’s like if a bleach manufacturer were sued because someone drank bleach and died.
Do you think there is something to this—that there is a claim against someone who provides a service that can be dangerous and can also be harmless, depending on the users?
Answer
As long as everything is transparent and no information is actually being hidden, in my opinion there is no basis for a lawsuit. There is room for regulation that limits these networks for those reasons.
