I believe that we have free will entirely independently of commandments and theology. First of all, because that is the experience each of us has. Therefore, the burden of proof is on whoever claims that there is no freedom of the will. Since there are no good arguments in favor of determinism, I do not see why one should adopt it. Moreover, among the three mechanisms—determinism (causality), randomness, and free will (choice)—only the last is known to us directly. The others are hypotheses with no empirical basis whatsoever. All of this was explained at length in my book The Science of Freedom. I presented quite a number of additional arguments there.
