Q&A: An Argument for the Soul from Free Will
An Argument for the Soul from Free Will
Question
Hello Michi, how are you? I have an argument for the existence of a soul that comes from free will.
A) I experience that I have free will, so I have free will.
B) There cannot be free will if all I am is just matter, since matter is governed by the laws of physics.
C) So if that is the case, then I am not just matter; rather, there is something in me that is not merely matter (a soul).
Of course, the argument does not undermine free will, but I do not think it needs to be undermined, since this is such a basic human experience that it is far more reasonable in itself to assume that it is true.
What do you think about this?
Answer
I agree.
Except that the argument is unnecessary. Most believers in free will are dualists anyway.
