Faith out of Fear
Question
Is faith out of fear of punishment worth anything?
Answer
There is no such thing as faith out of fear of punishment. Perhaps observance of the commandments out of fear of punishment. That is certainly worth something, even if it is not perfect.
Discussion on Answer
Do you mean Pascal’s wager? If he fears punishment, that means he believes. There is no such thing as believing because of punishment.
I mean a situation where someone believes simply because he is afraid even to entertain what people claim will happen to him if he does not believe. In sacred Jewish books such as the Zohar and the Talmud, extremely harsh and horrifying punishments are described for every transgression (especially in the Zohar regarding the World to Come). Doesn’t that create a kind of subjective faith that comes from fear and habit, rather than rational faith that comes from proofs of the truth of these things?
And why is observance of the commandments out of fear of punishment worth something if it comes only from fear? After all, another person who was born more “brave” will be willing not to observe the commandments despite the punishment. So the reward is basically given to someone who observes the commandments simply because he was born afraid of punishment.
