Question

Hello Rabbi, I personally stopped being religious many years ago, but I wanted to ask you whether you think your thin theology can really work in practical terms. Meaning, if I understand correctly, your theology basically says: there is God, He gave the Torah, and that’s where the story ends. But: science is binding, there is no divine intervention, the Sages are not necessarily right and everything is interpretation, part of the Torah was not written by God, one must be committed to reason and universal morality, and so on and so on. The problem with this theology, in my opinion, is that these principles (which you do not accept) are too deeply embedded in religious and Haredi society (which is where I came from). In other words, it seems as if, if we dismantle these foundations, a religious society simply won’t be able to exist, or alternatively many, many people will abandon it. Now personally, as a secular person, that doesn’t bother me. The question is whether it doesn’t bother the Rabbi, as a religious person. Does the Rabbi think this really could cause a lot of people to leave religious society the moment they give up those principles, which are pretty basic?
