I’ve come to the conclusion that the debate about sex and gender is devoid of content. I’ll explain how I reached that conclusion, and I’d be glad to know whether you agree with my distinction or whether, in your view, I’m missing something.
Let’s start with the fact that it’s obvious that anyone who claims that gender depends on nothing is using a circular definition (“a woman is someone who identifies as a woman”), and so I won’t address that.
In one of your columns you defined gender in terms of personality traits, meaning that a woman is someone who behaves in a feminine way / has feminine character traits. But it’s obvious to everyone that there are males with feminine character traits / who behave in a feminine way (and vice versa). Even someone who doesn’t believe in separating sex from gender agrees with that.
It seems to me that both sides agree on exactly the same things, but choose to define gender according to two different definitions (it’s a dialogue of the deaf: one side is really talking about Yossi and the other side about Shmulik).
