Q&A: Promises in the Torah
Promises in the Torah
Question
Hello Rabbi,
Does the very fact that there are promises in the Torah, such as the promise of the Land of Israel to the children of Israel, not contradict the Rabbi’s view that the Holy One, blessed be He, does not intervene in our world (apparently)? After all, if He does not intervene, then why would He make promises? How would He know? And how could He guarantee it? Our choices are what make the difference…
Thank you very much
Answer
It is possible that the promises will be fulfilled through us. If we obey the Torah, we will return to the Land of Israel and gather in the exiles.
It is possible that at these points the Holy One, blessed be He, does in fact intervene. I always say that I cannot rule out His sporadic involvement in the world.
