Q&A: Further on God's Involvement in the World
Further on God's Involvement in the World
Question
Isn't it clear that there is some degree of God's involvement in the world, for the simple reason that the world has a purpose (moral progress, progress in faith, the success of the Jewish people, the ingathering of the exiles, the fulfillment of the prophecies, and so on)? Simply put—if that purpose is to be realized, you can't rely on nature and on human beings to get there on their own; from time to time a push in the right direction is needed.
Answer
That is possible, but it is far from clear. Large-scale purposes can be dictated in a statistical way (the law of large numbers), like what we see in Maimonides, Laws of Repentance, chapter 6. See column 539 (and if I remember correctly, also 39).
