Q&A: The Progress of the World
The Progress of the World
Question
Hello Rabbi,
I saw that the Rabbi says (apparently בעקבות Maimonides) that there is no point in complaining that there are bad things in the world, because it is not certain that the purpose for which the world was created could be achieved through a different kind of world.
Does that imply that there cannot be any change (for the better) in the laws of reality themselves ("the wolf shall dwell with the lamb," etc., in the literal sense)? And if not, then why didn’t the Holy One, blessed be He, create the world that way to begin with (unless He wants us to do it ourselves)?
Answer
The Sages themselves write that there is no difference between this world and the days of the Messiah except subjugation to foreign kingdoms. That is, we are not talking about a change in nature, but about repairing the world within the framework of nature.
