Q&A: Listening to a Torah Lesson During Physical Activity
Listening to a Torah Lesson During Physical Activity
Question
Hello Rabbi,
Is it permitted to listen to a Torah lesson while doing physical activity? Is there no concern of disrespect or something like that?
Is there any difference between different kinds of activities? (Running versus strength exercises.)
I’m asking about the difference because, for example, when running you sweat more, and during strength exercises you touch equipment (and maybe touch your shoes if you’re stretching).
Is learning when I’m wearing a sports tank top less appropriate, or is it possible? And what about shorts?
Answer
In my opinion, this is roughly like reciting Grace after Meals at the beach while wearing a swimsuit. That is the situation one is in, and so there is no disrespect in it.
