Q&A: Interpretation of the passage in Berakhot 12a
Interpretation of the passage in Berakhot 12a
Question
Regarding the passage in Berakhot 12a (lines 23–45). The truth is that the medieval authorities (Rishonim) were hard-pressed to explain this passage, and each of their interpretations has some difficulty, and I was perplexed until I saw the explanation of Dr. M. Benovitz (Talmud Ha-Igud – Berakhot, Chapter One): all the medieval authorities (Rishonim) assume that in the period of the Amoraim people recited “that all came to be by His word” over beverages; however, that is not actually compelled by the Talmuds in the end of chapter 6 (Babylonian Talmud 45b, Jerusalem Talmud 6:8), and it is possible that they recited “who creates living beings,” which has an opening and a closing formula (and not like Rabbi Shaul Lieberman, who wrote that this blessing of Rabbi Tarfon is a short formula), even over beer. According to this, the passage is much clearer and does not require the forced explanations of the medieval authorities (Rishonim). What does the Rabbi think?
Answer
I’m not currently familiar with this passage.
What is forced about Rashi’s interpretation? The medieval authorities (Rishonim) who disagree with him (it seems to me, HaMaor or Milhamot Hashem) agree that his interpretation is correct according to his mistaken version, based on the books of the Geonim.
