An attempt to refute the explanation of morality through evolution.

שו"תAn attempt to refute the explanation of morality through evolution.
שאל לפני 3 שנים

Hello Rabbi, I support the argument for the existence of God from morality, and I have heard a counter-argument that I would like to refute.
The counterargument is that the purpose of morality is the evolutionary success of the human species, and things like murder, theft, etc., would hinder evolutionarily a person and for any objective reason this would be problematic, there are a large number of arguments against this. One argument I thought of against this is that if this were the case, we would perceive nomads who don't want to live in groups, or willfully illiterate, in a very moral way because evolutionarily these are very important things.

This is an evolutionary explanation for morality, and it is based on a naturalistic fallacy. This explanation does not say that we should behave morally, but only explains why in practice we do so. The question is what is the basis for the demand to behave this way and the assumption that it is fundamentally appropriate to behave this way. If someone thinks that there is no demand and that it is not appropriate to behave this way, they do not believe in morality, and for them the argument from morality really has no validity.
