An operation to free hostages that will result in more casualties than the number of hostages
Hello Rabbi,
Suppose we had a choice between two options. Bombing the Hamas headquarters with all the Hamas commanders and all our hostages along with them, when such an operation would entail zero casualties for our forces, except for the hostages of course. The second option is a rescue operation that is estimated to result in X deaths, when X is greater than the number of hostages. Which option should we choose and why?
Best regards,

We don't do such calculations. Just as a person is forbidden to sacrifice himself even if he saves a few people. It is forbidden to kill people to save other people, and that is to say, he will be killed and not commit murder (a person saves himself at the cost of his friend's life). A rescue operation must definitely be carried out, even if it may result in more casualties. That is the role of the army.
