Invest time in studying legends in blessings?

שו"תInvest time in studying legends in blessings?
שאל לפני 3 שנים

Hello Rabbi,
We will study Tractate Berakhot during the summer in yeshiva.
I started studying the tractate in Bekiyot for the time being and I see that it is full of aggadot that by reading only in Bekiyot I don't feel like I'm able to get much out of it. I know that on the one hand the rabbi says that it is a waste of time to study aggadot and that it is recommended to invest the time in yeshiva in Gemara and Halacha, and on the other hand I feel like I'm missing out on a large part of the tractate this way.
I was thinking of learning a little about the legends so that their study would be more meaningful. I saw that the rabbi had also given classes on this in the past. Is this a good idea or a waste of time? In general, how should one study the legends of the tractate and how much should one invest in them?

I didn't understand the problem. You write that you miss a large part of the tractate. But if you don't get anything out of it, then what's wrong with that? In my opinion, it's quite a waste of time. After you have a set of insights and ideas and a change of mindset, you can get to the legends and that will enrich you a little (not who knows what). But studying them in and of themselves doesn't seem particularly useful to me. Especially if you're at an early stage (a yeshiva student), it's worth focusing on studying carefully. This requires effort, direction, and time.
