Priestesses? The teacher prayed 🤔

שו"תPriestesses? The teacher prayed 🤔
שאל לפני 4 שנים (19/11/2022 19:33)

1 A girl asked the teacher why there are no priests to work in the Temple? (They are studying the Pentateuch and Leviticus)
Instead of answering, the teacher began to pray.
She said it was a very difficult question and so she needed to pray…
I told my daughter that if the Torah were given today, it would probably also include priesthood and not include slave laws or an eye for an eye or about a world created in 6 days.
My daughter told me that it couldn't be because the Torah is eternal.

Who is right?
What does the rabbi think?

First, I object to your title. A teacher is allowed to pray. She is of course supposed to try and answer, but she is also allowed not to have an answer. Completely legitimate. From your question, it seems that you don't have a clear answer on the matter either. Maybe you didn't pray enough?…   To your question, I have no idea what would be written in the Torah if it were given today. I'm not even sure that's an option. God wrote the Torah and decided to give it at the time it was given. It is indeed true that laws can certainly change according to circumstances, and this does not contradict the eternity of the Torah. And finally, the Torah does not say priests or kohanot (by priests we do not mean males, as they are always written in the masculine gender). All of this is the interpretation of the Sages.
