Relationship between the severity of the crime and the punishment
I remember that we learned that a serious offense does not necessarily lead to a more severe punishment. There can be a minor offense with a severe punishment and a serious offense with a minor punishment.
And here in the Mishnah of the Sanhedrin, Chapter 9, Mishnah 3, it is necessary that there be a relationship between the severity of the offense and the severity of the punishment. It is written there that the Sages believe that stoning is the most severe punishment, since it was given to the blasphemer and the worshipper of the sabbath; "If stoning were not severe, it would not have been given to the blasphemer and the worshipper of the sabbath."
Does this contradict what we learned above?

In an article dealing with the issue of the severity of the punishment in relation to the offense, I also mentioned this gemara. Indeed, there it appears that the severity of the punishment is indeed proportional to the severity of the offense. This is also seen with regard to those guilty of capital punishment who intervened and were sentenced lightly.
