Values

שו"תValues
שאל לפני 3 שנים

peace,
I wanted to ask about the concept of "evil".
It seems to me that just as the value "good" cannot be rationalized, so too can "evil." It's strange to me to say, "I understand that x is bad, but why not do x?"
It's not clear to me whether evil is a value (given that the concept of value itself is morally neutral), or whether the concept of value only applies to positive concepts?
Or in other words, when I choose (choose values?) my values, should I make sure that they are in line with the value of "good," which is a kind of umbrella for all my values?

I'm not sure I understood the question(s). Is a bad value also a value? I use the term that way. But it's just a semantic question and not important. Regarding goodness as an umbrella, I dealt with this in my series of lessons on morality and halacha. To justify building a scale of values, we must arrive at the conclusion that there is a common scale for all values (otherwise it is impossible to rank them against each other), and I explained that the scale is the degree of goodness in each of them.
