The contingent argument

שו"תThe contingent argument

I learned a little about Leibniz's argument. Why is God necessary? (Following the beginning of your answer to the one who asked whether God could commit suicide, where you said that he is a necessary being.) After all, is it possible to imagine a situation in which there is nothing, not even God?

This is the accepted belief. The question of whether this can be reached by philosophical argument is not simple. It is very likely that it is eternal, that is, it has always existed. Otherwise, it too was created and the infinite regress repeats itself for it as well. And if it is eternal, then its existence is probably necessary (although there is no logical identity between the two). Anselm in chapter 4 of the Proslogion attempts to prove its necessity. See my first conversation in the first stanza.
