After I explained to one of the rabbis that I love that I am against the Basic Law of Torah study, he replied to me that the rule is, "If the great men of Israel instructed their messengers to lay it down, there is nothing necessary about it, and if they did not instruct, there is nothing superfluous about it."

It seems that you do not know my views or this is trolling. If someone called a great man of Israel says nonsense or something immoral, it does not change the judgment regarding these actions. At most, it changes the judgment regarding these personalities. Apparently they are not as great as you thought.
