Q&A: Shavers
Shavers
Question
Peace and blessings.
I wanted to ask the Rabbi his opinion about using electric shavers—whether they are considered a razor or not. I saw that the Rabbi was asked about this in the past, but there the main issue was the nature of the cut: whether it is considered shaving with a razor or cutting with scissors.
I wanted to ask from another angle: is the view that something classified as “like scissors” is permitted even when the result is equivalent to an actual razor simply a halakhic/formal definition, or would such a case also be forbidden in the twenty-third chapter?
I saw that the Chazon Ish forbids it under the twenty-third chapter. And it seems to me that, honestly, his words are very clear, and just as in the parable of the “swimsuit” that the Rabbi often speaks about, it is clear that one should follow the substance and not an arbitrary form, so too here: the Sages certainly did not create a permission on the basis of an arbitrary formal distinction, but rather on a substantive basis.
And although it seems to me that one could propose “hidden variables” that would explain why this particular form of cutting is forbidden according to certain “hidden variables” underlying the prohibition, it is doubtful whether that can really be done. And according to the reasons that appear at the beginning of Sefer HaChinukh’s discussion of the commandment, this is a commandment whose rationale seems tied to the visible result of the prohibition—that is, to the actual appearance it creates.
In addition, on this occasion I would like to wish the Rabbi a happy and blessed new year, for him and for all the members of his household. May we be blessed, and may your wellsprings spread outward and be absorbed within us, until “the earth shall be filled, etc.” And I would also like to express my thanks and appreciation for the significance and quality of the things the Rabbi brings for our growth.
(To resolve the apparent contradiction between a spring and a sea, I would say that with the Rabbi it is in the sense of a spring that flows from itself; with us it is still in the sense of a sea, etc., etc., etc.)
