Q&A: Shaving Machines
Shaving Machines
Question
Hello and blessings.
I wanted to ask the Rabbi for his opinion regarding the use of shaving machines: is it considered like a razor or not? I saw that in the past people asked the Rabbi about this, but there the main discussion was about the form of the cutting—whether it is done like a razor or like scissors.
I wanted to ask from a different angle: is it obvious to the Rabbi that razor-like scissors are permitted even when the result is exactly the same as a razor, or perhaps in such a case one should prohibit it?
I saw that the Chazon Ish prohibits it in such a case. And it seems to me that, honestly, his words are very persuasive. Just as in the “swimsuit” analogy that the Rabbi talks about a lot, it would seem that one should go by the substance and not by an arbitrary form, so too here one could say that the Sages certainly did not invent a permission on the basis of a merely formal distinction in an arbitrary way, but rather on a substantive basis.
And although it seems to me that one could posit “hidden variables” that would explain why specifically this form of cutting is forbidden, based on some “hidden variables” underlying the prohibition, nevertheless, seemingly this is at least a Torah-level doubt. And according to the reasons that appear in the medieval authorities (Rishonim) for the commandment, this is a commandment whose rationale depends on the result of the prohibition—that is, on the actual visible appearance.
In addition, I would like to take this opportunity to wish the Rabbi and his household a “good year.” If only we may merit that your wellsprings spread outward, and that the verse be fulfilled in us, “and the earth shall be filled…” And I would also like to express my thanks and gratitude for the importance and quality of the things the Rabbi brings before us.
(To resolve the contradiction that appears at first glance between a spring and a sea, I would say that with the Rabbi it is in the aspect of a spring, whose flow comes from itself; with us it is still in the aspect of a sea, etc. etc., and this is not the place to elaborate.)

Answer
That is definitely a plausible argument.
Thank you for the good wishes.
