Q&A: The Importance of Understanding the Reasoning in the Talmud and Its Commentaries versus Lomdus
The Importance of Understanding the Reasoning in the Talmud and Its Commentaries versus Lomdus
Question
Hello and blessings to the honored Rabbi,
I study in a Haredi yeshiva, and sometimes I feel it is worthwhile to linger over the reasoning and to understand the matter. On the other hand, recently I saw a quote from Rabbi Gershon Edelstein saying that it is not advisable to do this if one wants to become a lamdan:
“When one does not understand the reasoning of the Talmud, one should not dwell on it too much, for the fact that it seems to go against the straightforward understanding is not surprising, because we are not Amoraim. And to linger in trying to understand difficult lines of reasoning in the Talmud is not for us. This is how all the great scholars developed, and anyone with sound common sense sees that there are many things that are not understood. This is proper and trustworthy advice for anyone who wants to become a lamdan.”
I would be happy to know whether the Rabbi agrees with him, and more generally, whether the Rabbi advises that in the first years in the senior yeshiva one should also spend time understanding the reasoning, or deal only with lomdus.
Answer
It is obvious that one should spend time on the reasoning. At least try to understand.
